El Carprofeno, principio activo de Rimadyl, es un potente antiiflamatorio no esteroide, correspondiente a la clase de ácidos propiónicos con propiedades analgésicas y antipiréticas equivalentes a la indometacina, formulado para la administración oral en caninos.
Caracterizado por su seguridad, eficacia y tolerancia en perros de diferentes edades, razas y condiciones clínicas. Carprofeno es un inhibidor reversible de la ciclooxigenasa (COX) con acción más selectiva sobre la ciclooxigenasa 2 (COX2), la cual interviene en el alivio del dolor y la inflamación. La ciclooxigenasa 1 (COX1), que participa en el mantenimiento fisiológico de la mucosa gastrointestinal en funciones homeostáticas y en el mantenimiento del flujo sanguíneo en el riñón, no es afectado por el Carprofeno, lo cual se traduce en una excelente tolerancia y seguridad para los animales tratados en comparación con otros AINES o corticoides.
